There was some good news and some bad news. Emery tolerated the surgery very well. So well, in fact, that he is going directly to the general care floor once he is done in the recovery area. They were able to extubate him right away after surgery and he is not sick from the shock of so many toxins in his system like he was after the last surgery.
Unfortunately, the portion of his bowel that we were praying would survive never recovered. It was completely obvious to them that it needed to be removed. Emery lost the remaining section of his small bowel. His colon still looked good, so they connected his stomach and very small length of duodenum to the colon. I will pot the drawing they gave us at the last surgery so you can see what they were working with.
The good news is that in the immediate future, Emery will resume activities and appear just as healthy and happy as he has this last 21 days at home.
Emery will now be dependent on his IV nutrition- TPN- for all of his calories. We are hopeful that he will at least be able to eat some food for social reasons and drink water for hydration. As he is right now, he will not be able to get much more than 5-10 % of his calorie needs from food.
We will talk more about options and diet and the reality of life without a small later. For now, thank you for praying and please continue to pray for his recovery and for his future.
Melissa
