After seeing Mt. Rushmore we decided to keep driving to the next town to find a place to sleep. We got some Subway on the way out of town around 11pm and started on the road again. We figured we would stay in Wall, SD, the home of the famous Wall Drug everyone kept telling us about. Unfortunately, we found that all of the motels on the short 1 mile strip of Wall close down for the night! So, after filling up the truck at the station- also closed- we were back on the road to find a place to sleep. I think it was around 2 or 3am when we finally pulled off again and found a place where David was able to wake up the owner. After some sleep we were ready for Day 5. As you can see, David got plenty of practice at the pump, which he will need, since we will be pumping our own gas for at least the next 6 years! This may not seem strange to most people, but in Oregon you'll get yelled at if you get any where near that pump. Some people had recommended seeing the Corn Palace in Mitchell, SD and we saw several signs along the way pointing in that direction, so we made that our next pit stop.
It was neat to see all of the different ways this building could be decorated over the years with just corn and other plants. David also got to sample some of their famous corn on the cob. After lunch we continued driving, determined to meet Adelle for dinner near Minneapolis, MN. Adelle was one of my college roommates- we lived two doors down from each other in the dorms for the first 2 years and moved off campus into our first house for the third year. So, we spent a
lot of time together at Carroll, studying and drinking coffee. After Katie Gibson left, Adelle got me through the long distance days with David. She was a definite must see for me on this trip. We got to meet her very friendly dog, Dexter and her boyfriend while we were there. It was great to catch up on what has been happening with her and talk about some of our favorite memories from the "good old days." Thanks for letting us stay with you Odella!
